Mario is probably the most well know fictional game character in the entire world. Numerous games that star Mario and co-star Luigi have come out and have been extremely well received by the public. With all the attention on Mario, Luigi the younger of the two brothers is often neglected and forgotten. We like to focus the spotlight on Mario’s side kick Luigi, and let you better understand his fictional virtual life and history.
Luigi’s character is not always easily recognized as he looks almost exactly the same as Mario only with differently colored overalls. Actually, in the computer game called Mario Bros where Luigi was first introduced, Luigi was dressed exactly the same as Mario except for the green overalls as opposed to Mario’s red overalls. The developers probably simply changed the coloring so that it will save them effort and time. Regardless of what the developers intentions were, many players of the Mario Bros game considered Luigi to be a wannabe of Mario and a character that possess no personality. However, in later games Luigi’s character developed and is often portrayed as the younger, skinner, and taller of the two brothers. In addition, Luigi had different personality traits than his brother. Luigi is good natured, but is often timid and scared of difficult missions.
In the Nintendo game called Doki Doki Panic, Luigi was first given his first real distinctive characteristics such as being taller and thinner. Ever since this game came out, Luigi’s character design stuck to the gamers in the USA and has often been portrayed as such in the merchandise and cartoons. With the introduction of Super Mario Kart, the changes in Luigi’s character can be easily recognized. Since Luigi’s change in appearance and character traits, gamers begun to recognize Luigi as a separate identity and not a complete rip off of the famous Mario.
In most games Luigi was often neglected and was mostly there simply for laughs. However, his first real success was when he could be played as the main character in Super Mario Bros 2. This was a tremendous boost to his computer game character career. In this game Luigi is possessed and becomes the primary and final evil boss. The game finishes after you defeat evil Luigi and turn him back to normal using the Mario character.
Peach (get a princess peach costume) and Luigi were often considered to be the official romantic couple in the Mario world. However, in the primary Mario games, Luigi can be played as the character that saves the princess. Ideas of Luigi’s and Peach’s relationship seems to have been encouraged mainly in the Mario Sport games. In Mario Kart for instance, Luigi and Peach were shown to be dancing.
The history of Luigi shows that he does have a prominent role in the best selling games in the world. It is true that his spotlight seems to be somewhat if not all together taken by his older more famous brother Mario. However, over the years Luigi (get Mario and Luigi costumes) changed from a Mario look alike to a more developed and unique video game character.
